ANDRINGITRA NATIONAL PARKS


Situation: 22°07’ South - 22°21’ South and 46°47’ - 47°02’ East

The National park of Andringitra is in the southeast of Madagascar, in the region of Haute Matsiatra (GPS: 22°07’ south - 22°21’ south and 46°47’ east - 47°02’ east). It is 47 km south of Ambalavao along the main road n°7. The park extends over 31,160 hectares and its height varies between 650 and 2,658 meters and contains the peak Boby, the highest accessible summit of Madagascar. The nature, traditions and mystery, which surround Andringitra, make this park a mystic place to discover.

THE FAUNA


The park boasts seven species of shellfish; 190 species of insects; 78 species of amphibians; 50 species of reptiles; 54 species of mammals (lemurs, carnivores, bats, micro mammals); and 108 species of birds.

THE FLORA


Some 1000 plants species are found inside the National Park of Andringitra. The vegetation differs according to the forest type, but the vegetation of the mountains is the most interesting with trees that are are small and more branched out.

THE BEST OF THE FAUNA OF ANDRINGITRA

  • The endemic aloe of Andringitra, whose spectacular flowers bloom from June till September;
  • The Immortal or Helychrisum mirabile, whose white flowers open between July August .
  • The cacti rhipsalis baccifera
  • The epiphite plant ficus rubra
  • Osbeckia andringitrensis, which is a shrub endemic to Andringitra

CLIMATE


ANDRINGITRA N.P'S CLIMATE

The tourism zone of the park experiences a typical high altitude tropical climate. Temperatures range from -70 C (190 F) to 250 C (770 F). Below freezing temperatures are frequent at night between May and August, and the coldest average temperatures are in July and August. Annual rainfall averages 2,390 millimeters (94 inches). Strong rains are normal from December to the end of February with maximum monthly rainfall occurring in February. Abrupt climate changes and frequent unpredictable drizzle are possible at higher elevations in the park.
